![]() ![]() Sure it's more abstract, and not exact replica of the accusations, but the flavour is still there, which makes it less enjoyable. Personally, I feel it hits a little closer to home for some of the accusations, even if I still have fond memories of the time I played before. Why are they personally different to me? Well, Cultist Simulator, to grossly oversimplify, is more directly focused on being shitty to people to get power. While he's not the sole creator, he does have a stronger hand in that work due to it being a smaller team. In contrast, I prepurchased Cultist Simulator, which means I got all the DLC, but haven't touched it since the Dancer. Kennedy is also no longer at Failbetter, and I do like Failbetter as a company. Also, some of the people he mistreated contributed to the game too. He absolutely had a strong influence, but that's not the same as full authorship. Life is complex, and everyone has a different tolerance levels.Īs I alluded to in my post: Kennedy was a leader for the game, but the game was a team effort, so saying its his game gets murky. I can dislike McDonald's deforestation of the Amazon, dislike how I was treated as a former employee, and still order a McChicken with barbecue sauce. Second: The world ain't a black or white if/else statement. Being free really lowers the activation energy required to start playing. I guess we'll find out if I'd put my money where my mouth is with the zubmariner DLC if I enjoy the game. I wasn't planning to discuss my reasoning, but ya seem generally curious so I'll see what I can do.įirst off: We'll never know if I would have bought Sunless Seas since I got it for free. It's a shame that you get called a man on the internet, dude. Many in todays climate are in the latter camp, and that's why it matters.Īnd, you know, I don't know many women that would immediately gender another person male the same way that you would, but respect it all the same. There's a difference between someone being whatever-ist and writing good fiction in their bedroom, and people in power interacting with others on a day-to-day and making their life actively worse while making a good movie. Lovecraft wrote his racist-ass works on his own, with his racist-ass cat and compensating for his underbite the whole time. I would not "separate" art and creator, because the content is created with the harmed party as a participant in the creation. If a sociopath was abusing someone close to them for youtube content, but I found the end content funny? I would not continue to support that creator once I found out that was the case. Here's an interesting insight into what I assume is a differential in perspective. ![]() ![]() I'm also not looking for "If you don't like the author, just don't play it." Even if you are a fan of Alexis, or do not believe the accusations against him, I hope you can understand why someone else may differ. My question that may help with this: what other Failbetter employees had a large impact on Sunless Seas who's writing I could get a bit more excited for? I know it is a collaborative effort, and obviously Alexis was not the only contributor, but I'd love if you could tempt me with author names who are known for particularly memorable ports or stories or something like that, that would be neat. While I'm not going to hold it completely against this game, it does make it harder to motivate myself to play it. I've accepted his work as part of Fallen London, but did not feel a need to seek out Sunless Seas because of it (plus reviews that gameplay wise it wasn't quite as good as skies, even if many people preferred the atmosphere). That fact is unavoidable, and I go into it knowing this. If you are a purest, that's fine, but this question is not for you: What cheats have helped with your enjoyment of the game and where did you find them?Ģ) Sunless Seas was a work of Alexis Kennedy. With Sunless Sea being given away next week in the Epic store, I was wondering if the community had any advice for the following questions:ġ) I know going in that I will not have the extreme patience I have for Fallen London as well as Sunless Skies (80 hours and only stopped to wait for final update). ![]()
